David felt like he was going to go mad. He had been stuck in the cottage for the better part of two days. It was a comfortable little place, and it was clean and tidy, but Jeffrey had told him that he wasn’t meant to go outside just in case someone saw him and word got back that he was there. David didn’t see how, seeing as the only cottage close by was Arabella’s family home and the back of the cottage was full of thick trees. But Jeffrey was adamant, only allowing David to open the window.

This felt more like Jeffrey was tormenting him than an order from Derby. David didn’t believe it at all, but he wasn’t in the mood to fight with the young footman.

At least not in the beginning. Now he was willing to get into it with anyone. This might as well have been a cleaner jail cell.

Shortly after lunch, David tried to settle down in the lounge to read - Anna’s library was small but surprisingly extensive - but he found himself staring out of the open window. He wanted to go out and walk around, get some fresh air into his lungs that wasn’t through a window. Jeffrey was in the kitchen, so why not?

Using the front door, David headed out into the gardens. These were nicely tended to as well. David remembered Ian talking about how Anna enjoyed gardening, that she took pride in her flowers. He could see why; when things were pruned and trimmed, the whole place was beautiful.

As he walked around the lawn and stretched his legs - David had felt like he was bending double all the time inside - he found himself thinking about Arabella. He hadn’t heard from her since she left to head back to the main house. Was she all right? Was she regretting what had happened? David hoped not, because he didn’t regret it. The only thing he regretted was Jeffrey bothering them when he did.

Her body had been so soft, so warm. There were more curves than before. That had to be from childbirth. David didn’t care; he loved simply touching her. She was so pliable in his arms.

Hopefully, once Jeffrey wasn’t in the immediate vicinity, they could finish what they started. David was more than ready for it.

“What do you think you’re doing?”

David turned. Jeffrey was striding towards him across the grass from the kitchen door. His coat was off and his sleeves were rolled off. He did not look happy.

“I’m just having some fresh air.” David took a deep breath, stretching his arms out to prove a point. “It’s getting stuffy inside.”

But Jeffrey was shaking his head. “You shouldn’t be outside.”

“Come off it, Jeffrey! Who’s going to see me out here? I can’t get fresh air just from an open window. Are you trying to torment me for what happened between me and Arabella?”

Jeffrey didn’t answer, but from the flicker behind his eyes, David had hit a little closer to the mark than he expected.
